Raul A. Angulo is the author of Engine Company Fireground Operations 4th Edition. Captain Angulo is a 40 + year veteran of the fire service. His second textbook, Ladder Company Operations for the Fireground will be published in 2025. He was born in Los Angeles, California, graduated from Cathedral High School, and attended Humboldt State University where he majored in music, becoming an accomplished classical pianist and Latin/Jazz percussionist. He served in the U.S. Coast Guard as a rescue swimmer and attained the rank of Boatswain’s Mate 3rd Class. His training included the Marine Firefighting Schools at Treasure Island in San Francisco and in Yorktown, Virginia where his passion for firefighting was ignited. He served two short stints as a firefighter with Vernon (CA) FD and Farmington (NM) FD before landing his career job with the Seattle (WA) Fire Department. As a firefighter, he was assigned to E2, L4, E20, and L1, then trained to be a dispatcher at the Fire Alarm Center (FAC). After promoting to lieutenant, he remained at the FAC until he was assigned to E24 and E9, including two assignments at Training Division where he served as a recruit academy drill instructor. Promoted to captain, he was assigned to E33, E18, and finished his career at Ladder Company 6. Captain Angulo was an emergency medical technician (EMT) throughout his career and served on the SFD’s Hazardous Materials Unit, Wildland Firefighting Team, and the FEMA / Puget Sound Urban Search and Rescue Team. After 36 years of dedicated and honorable service, he retired as the senior captain of the SFD. Captain Angulo’s leadership positions included the Board of Directors for the Sumner (WA) School District, Board of Directors for the Fellowship of Christian Firefighters International, and a founding board member for the National Fire Academy Alumni Association. He was an advisory board member for the Fire Department Instructors Conference (FDIC) and is currently on the editorial advisory board for Fire Apparatus and Emergency Equipment magazine. He has over 350 articles published in all the major trade magazines including Fire Engineering, Fire Engineering.com, Fire Apparatus and Emergency Equipment, Firehouse, International Firefighter, and The Encourager. Captain Angulo has been teaching at FDIC International for over three decades and has taught throughout the U.S., Canada, Mexico, and Latin America. He teaches and lectures on fire service leadership, crew development, Calling the Mayday, Drills You’re Not Going to Find in the Books, and firefighting strategy and tactics with an emphasis on firefighter accountability systems.

Shigeo Tatsuki was one of the organizers of the Kwansei Gakuin University Relief Volunteer Center that managed about 7,500 student volunteers after the 1995 Kobe earthquake. From 1997 to 2005, he was an active member of Hyogo Forum for Advocating Individual Recovery. For his recovery advocacy work, he was awarded the Governor’s Award for distinguished service in 2005. From the late 1990’s, he became active in disaster research thanks to the mentoring of such brilliant disaster scholars as Haruo Hayashi, Kathleen Tierney, Joan Nigg and Bill Anderson through the US/Japan collaborative research initiatives that started from the mid 1980’s. His current fields of interests include long-term life (individual) recovery, disability- inclusive disaster risk, post-disaster management of emergent multi-organizational networks (EMONs), and impacts of social capital enrichment upon social safety, security and livability. On July 18, 2018, he was awarded the International Sociological Association Reserach Committee 39 (Sociology of Disaster) Charles E. Fritz Award for Career Achievements in the Social Science Disaster Area.

Prof. Dr. Hayato Yamanaka His major field of research is Visual Sociology. He has been studying about life stories of survivors of the Kobe Earthquake and social histories of indigenous islanders and immigrants of the Pacific Area by using visual media. His recent works are: “Remembering the Great Hanshin-Awaji Earthquake 1995: Voices, Footage, and Objective Data,” and “Awareness and Attitudes of the Post- Hanshin-Awaji Earthquake Generation Toward Passing on the Memories of the Disaster and Regarding the COVID-19 Pandemic Fiscal 2020 Survey Report.”

Dr. Kiyoko Ito She has received her Ph.D. in Turkish Literature at Istanbul University. Her major field research is on Turkish Oral Literature. She has been studying about Meddah, traditional storytellers in the Ottoman period. Her recent works are “A Comparative Study of Narratives from Survivors of the 1995 Southern Hyogo Earthquake and the 1999 Marmara Earthquake from a Socio- Cultural Perspective”, “An Ethnography: Recording Narratives of Survivors from the 1999 Marmara Earthquake as a Collective Memorization of Disasters in Turkey” and “Ethnic Diversity and Images of the City in Early Modern Turkish Oral Literature Representations of Istanbul and Ethnic Groups by Meddah.”
